Just for fun: Bright hair.

I'm a little late to the party with this post seeing as I dyed my hair months and months ago now! I thought I would just chip in with my experience and the products I used in case anyone else is a little unsure about doing it (as I was).
I also decided to paint this little watercolour to go alongside the post - it was actually based on the model Montana Cox, who won Australia's Next Top Model because I think she's pretty fab at what she does.

Anyway, I was a little worried about bleaching my very dark hair, and in the end had to do two bleaching sessions (a couple of weeks apart) to achieve a very blonde look. I decided to only do a small streak because I really didn't know how it was going to turn out, but my idea was that I could change the dye colour I used on it whenever I got bored. I used Jerome Russel Bblonde, and would definitely recommend it - it worked a treat. So yes, it did damage my hair slightly, but I think everyone would expect that to happen, as long as you seriously condition your hair afterwards the damage isn't particularly long lasting. So yes! If you are on the fence about bleaching, my advice would be to just do it! Especially if you intend to just bleach a small streak like me. Sorry that my hair looks extremely dishevelled in this photo but it was just to give an idea of how bright I actually managed to get my hair.

As for the colour itself, I used LaRiche Directions (I'm sure many of you will be familiar with these little pots) and they are essentially like little pots of goo! I mean that in the best possible way, they are very fun and easy to apply! I used my fingers to smooth this product all over my hair and left the dye in for around 20 minutes. The dye is semi-permanent, and you will notice some fading after 4 or so washes, so if you get bored easily, this might be a good dye to try. I used a combination of pastel and flamingo pink, the pastel helps tone down the intensity of the really bright pink, but still gives good colour pay-off. Sometimes I try and get an ombre effect by using Flamingo pink at the top of my hair and fading out to pastel, I'm not exactly an expert though, so that's slightly hit or miss for me! These little pots usually retail at around £3.99 and are available from Ebay, Amazon, and stores like Blue Banana.

Have you ever been tempted to try bright hair? Let me know!

  3. This illustration is gorgeous! I love the eyebrows on it too!

Also, the pastel pink showed up so well in your hair. I'd love to brave a pastel ombre - I just keep using the 'wild ombre' kits that are about at the moment! xx

    1. Aaw thank you! You definitely should! They are so easy to use and you can even dilute them with a bit of conditioner if you are worried about it turning out too bright :) xxx

  4. I'm such a baby, I'd love to do it but I'm not brave enough! I've never dyed my hair (I used a semi-perm about 5 years ago) and whenever I mention it to a hairdresser they put me off because they say my hair is nice natural BLAH. If I were blonde I would have a different hair colour (pastel) every month!I'm jealous of your bravery ;)

    Incredible picture btw!

    1. Aaw, I felt the same way for years! Then I just thought I might as well try it on just a small piece of hair so if I damaged it, then it wasn't the end of the world. Your hair is lovely as it is though! xxx

  5. I love pink hair, I've been wanting to dye my hair pink for so long but I really don't want to bleach it all, in the summer when I may try to dip dye it pink and see how it goes! This was very helpful Carly. And I love the watercolour, you're so talented! xx

  8. Love this drawing of Cara. She's such a babe, she's so lovely in real life and so pretty made me look like a hobbit. I want to ditch my dip dye I've had it for so long and the bleach has just killed my hair. Love your streak, I wrote one of the first guides on dip dye I use to get about 100 emails a day about it. Crazy. I do love it on people, I just wish I had fair hair than you can avoid the awful bleach :( xxx

    1. Wah, thank you so much! I know, I really don't like to bleach it, and I'm relieved that it didn't destroy my hair but I'm definitely wary of over-doing it! I love your dip-dye! xxx

  9. Lovely watercolors!! I really love fashion-y styles of drawing.

I love seeing these kinds of bright colors in hair as well :). Yours looks fantastic! And that is my favorite shade of pink. Unfortunately I'm at the point where my job won't allow crazy colors, though I wanted to get my hair to a reddish/brown color and that would need bleach.

    1. Thank you Chrissie - means a lot coming from you! I think it's my favourite shade of pink too, but it's always a little hit and miss how it's going to turn out so I think I got a little lucky :) xxx
